Sofia - Bucharest
There are two rail connexions between Bulgaria and Romania by train. From Ruse to Giurgiu and from Vidin to Calafat. Both routes cross the Danube. The tickets can be booked at international ticket window at Sofia Station online tickets are not available).
Sofia - Athens
A train leaves Sofia Central Station everyday at 15:00 to Thessaloniki. Every couple of hours trains link Thessaloniki with Larissa and Athens.

Traveling to Bulgaria
The national railway company is BDZ. Seat reservations are required for Expresen Vlak, high-speed trains, and night trains.
If you want to see the best railway spot in Bulgaria, you can take the Septemvri-Dobrinishte narrow-gauge line ! It is a 125 km long railway and offers a ride on bridges and in tunnels. Might as well get your heart racing with its spiral loops and you can also visit the Avramovo Station located at 1267 m altitude. You can find more information here.
